Materials:

Sizing:

Gauge:

Double Crochet Stitch – 12 sts & 8 rows = 4”x4″ (unblocked)

Gauge is important to your project so your finished piece will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The hook size for the pattern is based on what I used, but gauge can vary from person to person and be affected by yarn. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make 4”, try using a smaller size hook; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook. The pattern also provides measurements to obtain for a specific size. Using a combination of matching gauge and measuring, as closely as possible, should get you close to the desired size.

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • BLO – back loop only
  • ch(s) – chain(s)
  • crab st – crab stitch (AKA a reverse single crochet, insert hook into st to the right, draw up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops, repeat.)
  • dc – double crochet
  • FLO – front loop only
  • RS – right side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • spike st – spike stitch (yarn over, pull up loop through ch 1 sp of 2 rows previous, bring st back up to height of row, complete dc as normal. See picture.)
  • st(es) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong side

Special Stitch – Spike Stitch

Notes:

  • Beginning chains do NOT count as stitches so do not skip first stitch.
  • Joins are worked with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round. Not the chain.
  • Stitches between the [ ] brackets are to be worked the total number of times indicated.
  • Worked flat in rows and then sewn together to form cowl or hood.
  • Chain 1s count as stitches.
  • Want a longer/smaller cowl? Simply add/decrease rows to your piece in fours.
  • Want a taller/shorter cowl? Simply add/decrease stitches to your beginning chain in fours.
  • Want a longer/shorter hood? Simply add/decrease stitches to your beginning chain in fours. (You can adjust corset length by working more or less stitches in fours.)
