Free Crochet Pattern: Blooming Book Pouch

I’m absolutely thrilled to unveil my latest crochet pattern for your stationery with the perfect blend of practicality and charm: the Blooming Book Pouch! Imagine a cozy little pouch, delicately crocheted with love, designed to snugly attach to your favorite notebook. No more frantic searches at the bottom of your project bag for your trusty pen or crochet hook! Securely fasten it to your notes. Your essential tools will be easier to find, saving you precious time and sanity. It’s a lifesaver for those on-the-go moments – whether you’re jotting down notes in a meeting or sneaking in a few stitches on your latest crochet project during your commute, your tools are right there, keeping up with your busy lifestyle.

You’ll be using some basic embroidery to decorate your pouch with delicate little flowers and leaves.

Spring is just around the corner and I think this is perfect way to get into the mindset of the new season with a simple project. Though it would be great without the embroidery as well!

Materials:

Gauge:

Single Crochet- 16 sts by 16 rows = 2″

Gauge is important to your project so your finished piece will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The hook size for the pattern is based on what I used, but gauge can vary from person to person and be affected by yarn. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make 2”, try using a smaller size hook; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook. The pattern also provides measurements to obtain for a specific size. Using a combination of matching gauge and measuring, as closely as possible, should get you close to the desired size.

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • ch(s) – chain(s)
  • RS – right side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 together, decrease
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(es) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong side

Notes:

  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
  • Created in 2 pieces layered and connected with a crochet edge. Elastic sewn on last.
  • Stitches with the number appearing first will all be worked into the same stitch. For example, 5dc would be 5 double crochet all worked in the same stitch. Whereas, dc 5 would be one double crochet worked into each of the next five stitches.

Sew Together With Edge:

Line up the two pieces, your back piece should extend approximately 1.25″ past the front piece. Tack down either corner of the front piece and the bottom point to help hold the piece in place as you crochet the edge on.

From the RS, or the side with the front piece on top, attach yarn at the left corner of the front piece and going through both layers, ch 1, sl st same place you attached to, [ch 1, sl st] around the entire piece going through both layers where the pieces overlap. Fasten off after placing the last sl st. Weave in all ends.

Sew Elastic Band On:

If you have the book you will use your pouch on, measure the elastic around the book until it touches either end of the pouch while being stretched. If you know the size of the notebook, for example a standard school notebook is 11″ tall, use a piece of elastic that is the length of the notebook doubled (11×2=22″) minus the length of your pouch (22-7=15) minus 2″ for negative ease (15-2=13). You don’t want the elastic too loose, or it will not stay on your notebook.

Standard Notebook/Book Sizes

While the best way to get the length for your elastic is by using the notebook or book you’ll be putting it on, I have created a little graph with some standard sizes to help you make your pouch if you are creating for gifts or selling.
