Misty Mountains Square

Welcome to Day 15 of the Winter Wonder Squares Crochet-A-Long!

Just a quick recap of how this works. This is a blog hop style crochet-a-long! Each day a new square for this winter themed blanket is released by a new designer. That means 17 total designers created 22 beautiful and unique squares just for this blanket! You can find the links to all the squares on our host blog from Bear Rye!

https://www.bearrye.com/2019/11/Winterwondersquares.html

Each designer gives away their square for FREE on their blog and you can also download PDF versions for limited times from each designer. So make sure you go to that main page each day to grab your copy.

There is also a GIVEAWAY! Lovecrafts has donated 10 Paintbox Yarns that will be given to one lucky winner who participates in the crochet-a-long! You can find more information on exactly how that works from Bear Rye on Instagram.

We also have a Facebook Group where you can share your own progress and see the progress of others working on the blanket! There are so many possibilities with color choices and the order in which you put your squares together that each of your blankets can be unique! Let’s show them off!

Now for my square!

I am calling this the Misty Mountain Square! When I was thinking about what the season and holiday mean to me I had a hard time narrowing down to just one image for my square. I love fall and winter and the holidays have so many fun memories and fond traditions. One of my FAVORITE things though is the change in the weather.

I live in the Foothills of California and it doesn’t start to get really cold until about December. Once December hits though the mornings become cold and misty. I am not high enough in the mountains that I get lots of snow but there is a beautiful calm about foothill mornings. You can see the tops of the hills peaking up over the fog and they fade into the background from dark to light. I love the way it looks and watching the sun slowly start to brighten it all up as we head into each new day.

I created this square with the white background to represent that fog and misty feel and used dark to light greys to show the fading of the hills. I love the way it came out and I hope you do to!

Misty Mountains Square

Materials:
Approximately 100 yards of worsted/4 weight yarn
G/4 mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Measuring Tape

Sizes:
8” by 8” Square

Gauge:
sc – 20 sts and 22 rows = 4”

Gauge is important to your project so your finished piece will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient.
The hook size for the pattern is based on what I used, but gauge can vary from person to person and be affected by yarn. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make 4”, try using a smaller size hook; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook.

Notes:
Beginning chains do not count as stitches so do not skip the first stitch.
Worked from the bottom up, starting with base of mountains.
Pattern is written for a square that is 8”x8”.
To make your square wider add stitches on both ends of rows in equal amounts.
To make it taller add rows at the beginning and end but begin popcorn stitch row on an even row.
Please note that if you change these stitch and row counts the image will not change size just the border around it.
Popcorn stitch rows are all worked one way (even rows) with a row of single crochet between each (odd rows).
When popcorn stitch rows or “front” is facing you, your first mountain should be on the left and should match image on graph.
Popcorn stitch colors are indicated within pattern with abbreviations, all other stitches are worked in your main color.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
ch(s) – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
pop st – reverse popcorn stitch (4 sc in same st, remove hook, insert hook into first of 4 sc from back and then through working loop, pick up main color and draw through working loop and first sc, this should push the stitches to the side facing away from you or what will become the “front” of your piece.) See picture for visual aid.
C1 – color 1 (I used dark grey)
C2 – color 2 (I used medium grey)
C3 – color 3 (I used light grey)
